Singapore—The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) took to Facebook today to laud a 15-year-old student whose quick thinking may have saved the life of a woman hit by a bus.
After the bus that Diniy Qurratuaini was riding home on collided with a woman, the teenager immediately rushed to the woman’s aid, performing CPR and staying with her until she regained consciousness.
As the SCDF wrote in its post, “age is no barrier to saving lives.”
Ms Qurratuaini, who is a National Civil Defence Cadet Corps (NCDCC) cadet from Temasek Secondary School, was on her way home earlier this year on July 15, when the incident occurred.
At that time, the bus was on New Upper Changi Road and bumped into a woman pedestrian, who fell unconscious.
After this occurred, the NCDCC cadet’s training kicked in immediately, showing the presence of mind and calmness that many people even twice her age or older sometimes do not have.
Accoding to the SCDF, Ms Qurratuaini “did not hesitate” to rush to the fallen pedestrian’s aid. First, she told another passenger on the bus to call 995, the number for the SCDF’s emergency ambulance service.
And then, the cadet assessed the fallen woman’s condition, and found out that she had no pulse, and was no longer breathing.
The teen immediately began to perform CPR on the woman. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is an emergency procedure which, through the combination of chest compressions and artificial ventilation, is an effort to manually preserve the functions of the affected person’s brain until such a time that more measures can be taken that would restore spontaneous blood circulation and breathing in a person who has stopped breathing.
The SCDF’s account said that Ms Qurratuaini performed several CPR cycles until the woman became conscious, and that the cadet stayed with her until professional emergency rescuers arrived on the scene.

Diniy Qurratuaini, a National Civil Defence Cadet Corps (NCDCC) cadet from Temasek Secondary School, was on her way home when the bus she was on collided into a pedestrian, knocking her unconscious. Without hesitation, Diniy instructed a fellow passenger to call 995 before she rushed down to attend to the collapsed woman.
After assessing that the woman was not breathing and had no pulse, Diniy immediately performed CPR on her. After a few cycles of CPR, the woman regained consciousness. Diniy stayed by her side until SCDF emergency responders arrived to render further medical assistance.
Diniy’s quick-thinking and selfless act showed that age is no barrier to saving lives.
