Mid-flight meet-cute: two passengers start dating after holding hands during a turbulent flight

In what sounds like the plot of a romantic comedy, two strangers sat next to each other on a plane and accidentally held hands during a turbulent flight. Next thing they knew, they were in love.

The man, Xu Zhewei, booked a plane going home to Taiwan because he had been fired from his job. Before boarding the plane, he noticed a petite lady carrying a bag that was too big for her.

Coincidentally, Xu was surprised to see that he was sitting next to the lady from earlier. She asked him to help her in putting up luggage in the overhead bin.

Liu sat a seat away from Xu, but moved closer after their initial friendly interaction. Photo from Facebook @zhe.wei.33886.

The two of them originally sat a seat apart. The lady, Liu Yudan, from mainland China, decided to sit next to Xu and even offered him cherries that she was eating.

Xu learned that Liu was also headed to Taipei and asked if she wanted to travel the city together. The two passengers exchanged some friendly conversation, but the plane began to undergo a few minutes of turbulence.

Xu said, “I felt something and turned to look at her. She seemed to feel something too.”

As the plane was swaying from the turbulence, Xu held Liu’s hand and told her “It’s okay, it’s safe.” They moved closer together, and Liu eventually fell asleep.

Upon arriving safely at their destination, Xu and Liu toured the city together. Xu helped Liu get a leisure card, shared a drink, and went with her on the MRT.

Sharing his life-changing experience on Facebook, Xu said that “The two of us have clearly known each other for only a day, but it’s like we’ve known each other for years.”

They started dating soon after, and they even updated their Facebook relationship status.

While some netizens remained skeptical of Xu and Liu’s story, many were amazed and expressed their congratulations for the new couple. Others commented in jest that they were inspired to travel and hoped that they too might meet their future significant other during a fateful flight./TISG
