The moral police of Kelantan, Malaysia is at it again. This time, issuing notices and advice to 39 women for wearing dresses that were too tight or for not fasting and for improper dressing.

The assistant director of the Kelantan Islamic Religious Affairs Department (JAHEAIK) issued the notices during a stake-out, targeting those wearing tight dresses and women who were not fasting.

Officers of the JAHEAIK were in operation within the entire district of Kelantan. At least eight women were verbal reprimanded for dressing improperly.

During the operation which lasted from 10am to 7pm, two individuals who were not fasting were reprimanded.

JAHEAIK assistant director (Shariah Law Enforcement) Mohd Fadzuli Mohd Zain said there were 70 enforcement agencies involved in the massive operation.

Among the agencies were the Kota Bharu Municipal Council-Islamic City, the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) and the National Anti-Drug Agency.

Describing how the operation was carried out, Fadzuli said the team formed several groups and were sent to various locations within the district, including Ramadan bazaars, restaurants, and shopping malls.

“During the operation, JAHEAIK issued a service notice to advise 39 women who were ‘ill-mannered’ and eight were verbally reprimanded.

“We also provide advisory services to two individuals who were not fasting,” he said to the local media in Kelantan, adding that the officers will be deployed again for the same operation during Ramadan.

The aim is to ensure the people are in compliance with the set rules.”

In Kelantan, public displays of affection such a kissing or hugging is an offence even for married couples. Both Muslim men and women are also subject to a ‘decency’ dress code which advocates modesty at all times.
