A Tanjong Pagar GRC resident has lashed out at ruling party Member of Parliament Sam Tan Chin Siong for allegedly not looking into the persistent high-rise littering problem at Jalan Bukit Merah despite repeated calls for him to address the longstanding issue.

Tan was formerly a member of the Tanjong Pagar GRC team until 2011 when the district within the GRC that he was a member of was carved out as Radin Mas SMC.

The resident, Facebook user Simon Lim, claims that Tan is in-charge of the area around Jalan Bukit Merah – particularly the area around Block 106 – that is extremely filthy during the day due to a pervasive high-rise littering problem in the area.

Even though cleaners manage to clean the area in the evenings, Lim claims that the area is back to its dirty “sorry state” by the time morning rolls around daily.

When Lim personally approached Tan at his office to highlight the problem, he was allegedly met with nonchalance by Tan who apparently did not give any assurances that he will look into the issue: “instead of assuring me that he will do his best and whatever necessary to address the problem, he had the gall to nonchalantly said to me that those are the dirtiest estate in the whole of Singapore!”

Lim shared on Facebook that he approached Tan at another community event after meeting him at his office to raise the killer litter issue again but apparently nothing has been done to date.

Frustrated, Lim admits that he has taken to Facebook to “shame pap mp Sam Tan publicly”.

Citing the new cameras the National Environment Agency (NEA) has installed in some residential estates for high-rise littering enforcement, Lim called on the statutory board to monitor the situation at Jalan Bukit Merah since Tan is “useless at tackling that long standing problem”:

“On page B9 of today’s Straits Times, NEA admitted that they have mounted surveillance cameras to catch high rise littering offenders. I would like to very strongly urge them to start with block 106 Jalan Bukit Merah. I guarantee that they will have a very fruitful harvest. Pap mp Sam Tan is completely impotent and useless at tackling that long standing problem. I stand by what I have posted here and I want to be put on record.”

In case you cannot read the above:

“The purpose of my comment is to shame pap mp Sam Tan publicly.

“Sam Tan is one of the pap mps of Tanjong Pagar GRC and I openly invite any members of the public to come and visit block 106, Jalan Bukit Merah which is under Sam Tan’s watch and see for themselves at first hand the very, very pathetic high-rise littering problems there, the surrounding of that block and the general environment anyday, and when I say anyday, I mean anyday from 4.00am and before 6.00am and in case readers may wonder why, the simple reason is because after 6.00am when the Bangladeshi workers go about their cleaning rounds, then readers may not get to see the real and actual situation on the ground.

“I am a resident in Tanjong Pagar GRC. I have personally visited Sam Tan at his office to highlight to him about the very, very sorry state of cleanliness there and block 106 Jalan Bukit Merah in particular and instead of assuring me that he will do his best and whatever necessary to address the problem, he had the gall to non-chalantly said to me that those are the dirtiest estate in the whole of Singapore…! I met him on one other time about >1 year ago at another community event and feedback to him the same issue but to-date, nothing much has been done.

“I repeat. I invite any members of the public to come and see for himself/herself the very, very sorry state of cleanliness at block 106 Jalan Bukit Merah anyday just before dawn. I hope that more people can respond and please spread the words around.

“I thank you all very much for reading my post again.”
