Channel NewsAsia anchor Steve Lai slipped up when he accidentally indicated that Beijing could “send troops into Singapore” instead of “send troops into Hong Kong” on live television, recently.

The slip up and quick recovery was caught by Reddit user u/alcowhorelic who re-posted a clip of the incident on the Singapore subreddit. The short 8-second clip quickly drew nearly 1,000 upvotes as netizens praised the seasoned television anchor’s calm demeanour despite the slip-up.

In the video, Steve Lai and Glenda Chong can be heard discussing the 11th week of protests in Hong Kong with a reporter on the ground. As Mr Lai discusses the possibility of whether Beijing will send troops into Hong Kong, he slips up and says “Singapore” instead of Hong Kong.

His mistake is sharply caught by his co-anchor, Ms Chong, who points out that he means Hong Kong – not Singapore – and Mr Lai makes a quick apology before moving on. Watch the exchange HERE.Follow us on Social Media
