More details have been emerging regarding the domestic helper who has been charged for murdering her 70-year-old employer earlier this week. According to the Chinese daily, the 24-year-old accused is named Zin Mar Nwe who was employed at the home of the victim just two months before the alleged murder.

Zin, a Myanmar national, was hired earlier this year to care for the victim, Mehrotra Shashi. Shashi had been living with her daughter, son-in-law and two young granddaughters at a HDB unit in Block 791 Choa Chu Kang North 6 for the past 17 years.

At 3.09pm on Monday, 25 June, Shashi’s family contacted the police after they discovered Shashi lying unconscious in a pool of blood, appearing to be inflicted with multiple wounds. Paramedics who arrived at the scene shortly thereafter reportedly found that the victim had been stabbed multiple times primarily in the neck and chest.

Shashi was pronounced dead at the scene at 3.29pm.

The helper, in the meantime, had absconded from the home by the time Shashi’s family discovered what had happened. Police officers arrested Zin at an undisclosed location about three hours after the alleged murder, following a search. Cab drivers were also requested to keep a lookout while the police continued the hunt for Zin.

The Chinese daily reports that the alleged murder weapon has yet to be recovered. Over 30 bags of evidence were collected while the crime scene remained sealed for 12 hours following the discovery of the crime.

Zin was charged in court yesterday and has been remanded for one week to undergo psychiatric evaluation. Since this is a capital case, bail will not be offered to the accused who could face the death penalty if found guilty for murder.
