Crazy Rich Asians Constance Wu wore a stunnning off-shoulder yellow dress at the 2019 Academy Awards recently, bringing out her immense charisma and beauty.

Yet, ‘looking beautiful’ is not the main reason for her choice of colour. The 37 year old admitted on Instagram that she chose the colour because it made her very happy and it was inspired by Coldplay’s “Yellow”, which was the closing song of the hit movie Crazy Rich Asians.

In another post she also expressed her heartfelt thoughts, saying,”My whole life I’ve had a complicated relationship with the colour yellow.”

“From being called the word in a derogatory way throughout grade school, to watching movies where they called cowardly people yellow, it’s always had a negative connotation in my life.”

“[Until] I heard your song. For the first time in my life, it described the colour in the most beautiful, magical ways I had ever heard: the colour of the stars, her skin, the love. It was an incredible image of attraction and aspiration that it made me rethink my own self image…”

For Wu, “yellow” helped her to reclaim her identity.

Her reason for writing this was because she was in “Crazy Rich Asians” and her role in it taught her “she’s good enough and deserves the world, no matter what she’s been taught or how she’s been treated, and ultimately that she can be proud of her mixed heritage”.

To her, that realisation is “an empowering, emotional march and needs an anthem that lives up to and beyond her inner triumph, which is where Yellow comes in.”

Netizens have also expressed much postivity and love to Wu’s post.
