Actress Jun Ji Hyun is set to join the cast of ongoing Netflix original Korean drama series Kingdom for seasons 2 and 3 according to reports on 28 November.

It’s been reported that the drama’s staff as well as Netflix Korea carried out negotiations to bring Jun Ji Hyun on board very secretively as filming for Kingdom season 2 began this past summer.

Jun Ji Hyun is reportedly playing a critical role towards the end of Kingdom season 2 and will continue to season 3 as an important lead character.

It is the first ever Netflix original K-drama, attracting fans worldwide after its release.

Scriptwriter Kim Eun Hee of Sign and Signal wrote the screenplay and it is directed by Kim Sung Hoon of A Hard Day and Tunnel.

Kingdom is about the fictional story of a crown prince of the Joseon era whose kingdom is faced with a plague, turning citizens into the undead.

Joo Ji Hoon, Bae Doo Na, Ryu Seung Ryong and Heo Jun Ho are among the stars of the show.

It has been approximately four years since Jun Ji Hyun acted and this marks her official return as well as first production since giving birth to her second son in January 2018.

The season 2 premiere of Kingdom is due March 2020.

Born as Wang Ji-hyun on 30 October 1981, Jun Ji-hyun is also known by her English name Gianna Jun. The South Korean actress debuted her acting career as the girl in the romantic comedy My Sassy Girl which is one of the highest-grossing Korean comedies of all time.

Her resume includes Il Mare, Windstruck, The Thieves, The Berlin File and Assassination.

Her notable drama series include My Love from the Star and Legend of the Blue Sea. Jun Ji Hyun is an established top Hallyu star thanks to her success in films in TV dramas internationally. /TISG
